My Design Process

It usually starts with nature photos that I’ve taken on our property or wherever else I happen to be. I especially LOVE flowers, weeds, bark, trees, butterflies and leaves. I bring some of them inside because I enjoy sketching from the actual item.

The photos get translated into my sketchbook with pen and ink. At a later time, they are vectorized using Adobe Illustrator, colored into designs and put into repeat!

Usually, when I’m somewhere in the middle of creating fabric designs and color stories, my mind begins to think about how they will look beside each other in a quilt setting. Next thing I know, I’m creating blocks and making a quilt layout to try out the fabric scales and colors I am considering. I make a LOT of changes during this phase and try out each fabric in multiple colors to see which ones really “sing”.
