In Restless Pursuit
I’ve never thought about the sun rising, then setting and hurrying back into place so that it can rise again on schedule. There is somewhat of a restless pursuit even in that.
The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.
Ecclesiastes 1:5
Humanly speaking, we are also in restless pursuit of meaning for our lives. Without God it can be meaningless, frustrating, absurd and empty. Sadly, that is how those who don’t know the Lord look at life. They seek after all kinds of things that will give meaning to their lives, but as each one is obtained, the emptiness lingers and so they move on to try something else.
Jesus gives meaning to our lives because we realize our true purpose is to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. We can align our desires with His and experience true peace and joy. As a believer, I prefer to view the sun’s daily cycle as fulfilling its purpose in rising and setting to give glory and honor to God. God created all things for His glory.
So when you hear your family or friends hurrying through their days and lives in order to take part in all the trivial activities they seem to think are important, remind them that God invites us to REST in Him and marvel at His majesty and sovereign reign over creation.
Remember Psalm 46:10 – take time to be still before Him and ask Him to show you your purpose.
