A Quiet Spirit Is Good

A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.
Ecclesiastes 3:7

This little verse of opposites brings a couple of things about my life to mind:

  • No one understands sewing and tearing more than I do after spending many years sewing and quilting. Since I didn’t have perfect skills, there were many times I would make mistakes and have to tear out things I had sewn. Many times it happened when I was in a hurry and didn’t “measure twice and cut once“.
  • Then growing up, a youth counselor spoke some wise words to this quiet, introverted little girl. I envied friends who were outgoing and could talk to others with ease and had a tendency to put myself down for being shy. She shared I Peter 3:4 – “But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” Now whenever I have a tendency to think that way, I remember that God made me this way and He loves it when I show up in quiet-ness to spend time together!
