Vexation
For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
Ecclesiastes 1:18
Vexation isn’t really a word you hear people use today. What does the dictionary say about it? “The state of being annoyed, frustrated or worried.”
As youngsters we come and go as we please without too many cares in life. Our parents take care of all our needs and teach us about life. Mostly, life is happy. As we grow, we begin to see the harder parts of life. Things happen to people we love, things happen in the world around us and at school that we don’t understand. Then the older we get and have our own lives, families and jobs, the more we see the imbalance of hard, bad and frustrating to happy, perfect and fun. For some the balance falls more toward disappointment or vexation.
There are things happening to us that can cause us to worry or be frustrated thinking , “this is my life?” The older and wiser we get, the more we see grief and sorrow around us. Especially for those who don’t now the Lord. Life without the Lord is sad, troubling, and frustrating, because we don’t understand our purpose in living.
Yet it was God who created us with a desire to figure out our lives. To find our purpose. He seeks after each of us to help us see our need of Him. He pursues us relentlessly! He gives us many opportunities to find Him, but we are often too busy thinking we have to do it ourselves that we miss it. What wonder to find the Lord while we are still young and can find joy and contentment for the remainder of our lives by serving Jesus.
Father, I think You for calling me back to You so that my life has purpose. I have hope in a Savior who gives me joy and peace in this life I live. I don’t see increased sorrow or despair because I have Jesus who walks with me through life. A-men!
