Nothing New?
The Preacher continues his point that life is vanity, or meaningless, and the tone of this verse makes me think of Winnie the Pooh’s friend, Eeyore.
What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 1:9
In the world of art I was always told there is nothing new, just variations of what has been done before. I’m not quite sure what I think about that statement. There may be some truth to it, but then again as a believer in God, I believe that in Him all things are new. There are new generations of people being born all the time. Each person is new and different from all others and has new ideas of things to create that have never before been expressed from their viewpoint.
We all strive throughout our lives to make a mark for ourselves, to do something significant that we will be remembered for. But our strivings and achievements will one day be forgotten. Do I really remember all the achievements that my Mom did while she was alive? Some of my lasting memories are of her spiritual guidance in my life. Why? Because fearing God and living for Him is what gives meaning to our lives. I believe she read and understood Ecclesiastes!
